Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and is a cosmopolitan dwelling that boasts pristine beaches, hiking trails and 50 surrounding magical islands all within half an hour of the centre. Its warm temperatures, Polynesian culture, world-class shopping, dining and drinking makes it an exciting holiday destination for all travellers with varying budgets. A multitude of tourist activities are on offer including kayak hire to Rangitot Island, sailing on a genuine America’s Cup racing yacht and dolphin and whale spotting in the impressive Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.
In the Maori language, Auckland is known as Tamaki-Makau-Rau which translates as “the maiden with a hundred lovers,’ a name which derives from the fact that the area used to be covered by many tribes. The city’s Maori heritage along with many other exhibitions can be explored at the Auckland Museum.
