Bay of Plenty
The Bay of Plenty’s name derives from 18th century navigator Captain James Cook who gave it this apt label due to its 100km of surrounding white sands, crystal blue waters, excellent surf, magnificent harbours and a relaxed lifestyle. The Bay of Plenty is situated on the east coast of the north island and its main areas are the nautical city of Tauranga, the surf and beach hotspot of Mount Maunganui, the Kiwi fruit capital of Te Puke, and Whakatane – an active offshore volcano and a base from which trips depart for White Island. The bay is described as a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike, and is located a two and a half hour’s drive from Auckland. The Bay of Plenty’s beauty is not only on its coastline; it also boasts attractive, lush hinterland, wilderness lakes, mountain ranges, and the Te Urewera National Park – New Zealand’s third largest national park.
