Martinborough

Martinborough’s name derives from its founder John Martin who established this settlement near Wharekaka in 1881.  The streets are planned in a Union Jack flag formation, and many of them are named after foreign places around the world that he had visited, for example, New York Street. The town is most famous for its wine production, particularly its reputable Pinot Noir, as it houses over 20 boutique vineyards within waking distance of the town centre. The fruity wines of the vineyards are complimented by the delicious cuisine of the superb restaurants in the town. The historic town square and Martinborough’s past can be explored on the Vintage Village Heritage Walk.
