Rotorua
Rotorua, in the centre of the north island, is located in an area of geothermal activity , which is clearly evident from the scent of sulphur in the air, sputing geysers, boiling mud pools and geothermal springs nearby. Rotorua is also the central point of New Zealand's Maori culture, and there are about 35 marae (Maori meeting grounds) in the area. Maoris allow a select few guests to watch cultural performances including songs, dances and story-telling, or a hangi feast - where the food is cooked in ovens underground. If you're a fishing fanatic, then Rotorua is the place to visit in New Zealand - huge rainbow trout can be found in the volcanic crater lakes in the area. Rotorua is also a haven for healing and relaxation, with many people visiting to indulge in the geothermal hot springs, spas and massage therapists.
