Franz Josef is a glacier - a slow moving mass of ice - 10 kilometres in length dropping from 2700 metres to 300 metres above sea level. It is fed from a neve (snow catchment area) located on a high plateau in the Southern Alps. This neve is 300 metres deep, and its huge mass and force opens up crevices and splits in the ice. This natural landmark can be explored on either a guided or self guided walk or the less cold option of a scenic flight.
