Greymouth

Greymouth is a small town which developed around the 1860's gold rush, and is full of history and Maori heritage. Despite its lack of size, Greymouth is the main destination along the west coast and is a great place from which to explore the surrounding area. There are a wide range of tourist activities in Greymouth situated close to the town cenre, such as the Art Gallery, Monteith's Brewing Company and the History House - all situated along the flood wall which protects residents from the Grey River.

Just south of Greymouth, Shantytown can be visited - a goldmining town established in the 1880's. Steam locomotive rides are available on which you can try your hand at gold panning.
