Invercargill
Invercargill is New Zealand's most southern city, making it one of the most southern cities in the world. It is the main city of the south island's Southland region, and is surrounded by huge conservation and marine areas including the Fiordland National Park. The name Invercargill derives from the Scottish word 'inbhir', meaining 'a river's mouth' and 'cargill' is in memory of Captain William Cargill who was the Superintendent of Otago in 1856. Invercargill is a great base from which to explore the Southland heartland, Stewart Island, Fiordland and the Catlins. The inner city has been recently upgraded, providing bars, restaurants and cafes alongside intruiging heritage buildings.
